Why?
All fire doors in Brisbane must comply with the Building Code of Australia and the Australian Standards.
Not being able to comply to these rules means garnering penalties and extra costs to fix or upgrade your doors.
Additionally, the correct instalment of fire doors is a crucial factor in the safety plan of your building. It is absolutely necessary to prevent the loss of life and damage in case of a fire.
Prior to installing a fire door, make sure to follow the steps below:
- Make sure the company or person you hired to do the job of installing your door has the proper licence and qualifications to do so.
- Ensure that the doors are placed in fire walls that match the fire rating of the door.
- Make sure that all doors, hardware, and door frames are at par with the approved model for the door and its corresponding accessories.
- Guarantee with your installer or builder that all doors in place are approved and tested requirements of the said door.
Additionally, it’s important that your door has the required rating after being installed. Non-compliance means immediate replacement or reinstalment.
Below are some guidelines to check if your fire door can pass the requirements.
- Your door leaf is installed the correct way up and the plates, hinges, and locks are fitted correctly.
- You cannot trim any more than 6mm from the edge of the fire door. Doing so would mean ordering a custom door to fit the size.
- The distance between the door and the frame must not exceed 3mm.
- There should be no less than 3mm and no more than 10mm distance between the door and the floor.
- The sill of the door should be made entirely from non-combustible material. A good example would be concrete.
- The closing mechanisms and the locks of each door must be tested and properly certified. Don’t forget that fire doors need to be self-latching.
- There should be no locks or deadbolts installed on your doors as this goes directly against the Build Code of Australia, as well as the Australian Standards.
